Manhattan to Litchfield Without a Charging Stop: The Escalade IQ and 465 Miles
The Escalade now comes with a 205 kWh battery, the biggest ever fitted to this model, and provides a range of 465 miles according to Cadillac figures when using the standard-wheelbase IQ; it has 680 horsepower as standard and 750 horsepower in the Velocity Max version, which also produces 785 lb-ft of torque, all based on an 800-volt electrical architecture that enables it to gain 117 miles in around 10 minutes.
We should be clear regarding the journey from the city; the distance from Manhattan to Litchfield is about 100 miles and almost any electric vehicle currently available is able to cover it without having to stop.
The fact that the Escalade IQ can do so is not the noteworthy point. The story is like this: you arrive on Friday. During the weekend you go to Bantam for lunch, visit White Flower Farm, take the kids to Mohawk and have dinner in Washington Depot. You leave on Sunday night without plugging in at either end, and you repeat the same thing the following weekend.
What 465 miles provides is not a single heroic journey, but rather the absence of thinking about it.
What the numbers actually are
The Escalade IQ with the standard wheelbase is estimated to provide 465 miles of range on a full charge, while the longer IQL, which is new for 2026, has an estimated range of 460 miles; both models use the same 205 kWh battery pack.
Each trim comes with the same powertrain; the standard output is 680 horsepower and, when Velocity Max is activated, 750 horsepower is available together with 785 lb-ft of torque. Cadillac claims that it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds in this mode, which is odd to say about a vehicle that carries seven passengers and weighs as much as this one.
The various trims have different equipment, types of wheels, and finishes for the trim. They are the same in terms of power and range. If a salesperson says that the Premium Sport goes farther, then leave.
Charging, and the part most articles skip
It is the 800-volt architecture that accounts for the good charging figures since, at higher voltage, less heat is produced for the same amount of power and so the car can take a high charge rate without heating up.
Cadillac states that on a compatible 350 kW public DC fast charger the IQ will provide 117 miles of range in around 10 minutes.
The point you need to be aware of before making your purchase is that the Escalade IQ has a CCS1 charging port; it isn't the native NACS setup that Cadillac has fitted onto the Optiq. Although you can use Tesla Superchargers, you'll need a GM-approved DC adapter and must remember to take it with you; therefore, buy one and keep it in the console.
Home charging is where the trim choice actually matters:
The Luxury and Sport models are fitted with an 11.5 kW on-board charger, enabling a range extension of 22 miles per hour.
The Premium Luxury and Premium Sport models have 19.2 kW, resulting in a speed of 36 miles per hour.
If you do the maths, it changes the way you'll actually use the car. It takes around 21 hours to travel 465 miles from nearly empty at 11.5 kW and about 13 hours at 19.2 kW.
In neither case can it be done overnight. That isn't a drawback, it's just a consequence of the size of the battery. People who own long-range electric vehicles don't drive them down to empty and then refill them; instead, they plug in every night and top up the amount the vehicle has used during the day, and at speeds of 22 or 36 miles per hour a typical day's driving is easily covered while you're asleep. However, if you are the type of person who regularly arrives home nearly empty and need the car to be full by morning, then the 19.2 kW option is more valuable to you than the audio upgrade it comes with.
The feature nobody markets that matters up here
The Escalade IQ has the capability of communicating with your home. When used with the appropriate GM Energy charging equipment, it can supply power to your house while it is without electricity.
Anyone who lives in Litchfield County will already understand its importance. Many of the people in this area have a standby generator on a pad beside the foundation, using propane a few times each winter.
It doesn't serve as a complete substitute for a whole-house generator, and the equipment has to be bought and installed separately. However, having a 205 kWh battery stored in the garage is a substantial amount of stored energy. It's worth getting a quote from your electrician and verifying the exact equipment with us before you decide that you need both.
Be honest about the size
The length is 224.3 inches, which is equivalent to 18.7 feet, and the width is 94.1 inches when the mirrors are extended.
In some of the older houses in Litchfield, Goshen, and Norfolk the carriage-house garages aren't big enough for it, so you should take measurements before placing your order. It's better that you discover this when you're in your driveway than at the time of delivery.
The positive point is that when it is moving it takes up a lot less room than when it is parked. Four-wheel steering is fitted as standard and this greatly reduces the turning circle. Cadillac's Arrival Mode enables it to move diagonally at low speed, a feature which at first sounds like a gimmick but proves useful when you're trying to get out of a spot in Bantam on a Saturday.
The Air Ride Adaptive Suspension and Magnetic Ride Control are both fitted as standard, and on Route 63 and the rural roads leading towards Cornwall this combination is actually performing a function.
What comes standard, and what does not
Standard across the whole lineup:
Super Cruise hands-free driving, with three years of OnStar service included
The 55-inch Horizon Display spanning the dash
Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, Magnetic Ride Control, and four-wheel steering
Heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row buckets
Head-up display, HD Surround Vision, power-folding third row
The Premium Luxury and Premium Sport models come with 19.2 kW charging, power-closing doors, a 38-speaker AKG Studio Reference sound system (with Dolby Atmos as an option), massaging front seats, the Smart Trailering Package, and 24-inch wheels; the Night Vision feature and the Executive Second Row package are also available on these trims.
There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto available. Instead, Cadillac uses Google's built-in services, including Google Maps and Google Assistant, within the vehicle. It functions even when your phone is not connected, which is a useful feature. However, if phone mirroring is something you absolutely need, be aware of this fact before the car is delivered. You can still connect using Bluetooth for calls, music, and Siri.
Cargo and towing
There are seven passengers who are seated in three rows, and the cargo space amounts to about 119 cubic feet when the seats are folded in, together with a separate eTrunk located under the hood; that front compartment is the appropriate size for the charging cord and for the dirty materials you don't want in the cabin.
The towing capacity is 8,000 pounds when the standard-wheelbase IQ is properly fitted. The IQL, on the other hand, has a lower rating, ranging from 7,300 to 7,500 pounds depending on the trim level. To put this into perspective, the gas Escalade can tow about 8,100 pounds.
A single point worth mentioning is that towing has a strong negative effect on the range of electric vehicles, and you should expect to get only about half of the rated range or even less when you're towing a real load. This applies to all electric vehicles, not just this one. However, it is the figure that people are most surprised by, and it's better to find out about it from us rather than discovering it on the way to the lake.
Come look at one
Northwest Hills Cadillac is located at 2065 East Main Street in Torrington and provides service to Litchfield, Winsted, New Hartford, Harwinton, Thomaston, and the Farmington Valley. We are a member of the Sullivan Automotive Group.
There are many vehicles in the Escalade IQ range, and it isn't the best choice for every individual. It is quite large, its charging port is one generation behind that of the smaller Cadillac EVs, and the price is as it is. The only thing it does better than any other vehicle in the segment is eliminate the range issue altogether.
If you would like to check the inventory and arrange a test drive, please bring your garage dimensions.
Range, charging, performance, and towing figures are Cadillac-estimated and will vary with conditions, load, temperature, and equipment. Confirm current specifications, pricing, and availability with the dealership.
